Can You Swim on Your Period?

Whether you are taking a dip at the lake on a hot summer day or swimming laps indoors during the winter, there’s no reason why your period should interrupt the fun. Here are four helpful tips for swimming while on your period.

1. Always Wear a Tampon

It's safe to hit the water on your period, as long as you wear a tampon while you're swimming. Tampons will collect the menstrual fluid before it leaves your body — so you don’t have to worry about signs of your period showing in the water. Tampax Pearl Active tampons are a great choice because they stop leaks before they happen, even when you're swimming. (Remember: Don’t wear your tampon for more than eight hours.)

Check out the right way to insert a tampon and practice a few times before you head out to the water. Be sure to tuck the string into the lining of your swimming suit before you leave the bathroom, and you should be good to go.

2. Have Powerful Protection on Hand

Keep your period a secret with Tampax Pocket Pearl . They come in tiny carrying packets that can fit in the palm of your hand, pocket or in your smallest purse. Your backup stash will be your tiny little secret. Carry extra for friends.

3. Banish Period Breakouts

Being on your period might cause your face to break out with pimples and blotchy skin — and that's not great for a day out on the water. Reach for a high SPF sunscreen especially formulated for your face. Top it off with a tinted moisturizer to even out your skin tone and hide redness. If all else fails, go for a fashionable look with oversized sunglasses and a hat or cap that suits your style and shades your blemishes from view.

4. Keep Bloating and Cramps at Bay

Tummy troubles have no place at the beach or poolside. Steer clear of salty, fried and unhealthy foods — as well as caffeine. Stay hydrated with water, herbal iced tea, cool refreshing lemonade and fresh fruits and veggies. Some people swear by hot water and lemon to reduce bloating. Others opt for a heating pad to make cramps feel better. Figure out what works best for you and get to it.

Armed with the right products and tools, you can confidently go on with your swimming plans — and forget about your period!
