Toxic Shock Syndrome, or TSS, is rare but serious and sometimes fatal. TSS can be associated with tampon use. It is caused by Staphylococcus aureus, a bacteria commonly found on other parts of the body, such as the skin or nose. Anyone can get TSS, and early recognition and treatment are important.
Warning signs of TSS include sudden high fever, usually 102°F/38.8°C or higher, vomiting, diarrhea, a rash that looks like a sunburn, dizziness, muscle aches, fainting, and near fainting when standing. TSS can rapidly progress from flu-like symptoms to a serious illness that can be fatal. If you have one or more warning signs, immediately remove your tampon and contact a doctor. Tell them your symptoms, that you were using tampons, and that you think you may have TSS.
